1. What is the difference between proofreading and editing?

Answer:  The term "proofreading" stems from the days of typewriters and typesetting when it was necessary to check printed copy against a previous (often handwritten) version. But now people use "proofreading" to mean a general typographic review of any text.

Editing usually entails a more involved review that also includes stylistic elements in order to make the document more readable.

So, incorrect capitalization and mistakes in punctuation would fall under proofreading, while sentence structure and word choice would be considered editing.

2. Doesn't my software include a spellchecker?

Answer:  Yes, but...

The short answer is that spellcheckers can provide a helpful function. However, they do have many limitations. Ultimately, electronic spellcheckers provide a false sense of security, leading some people to erroneously believe that their document is flawless. In some cases, electronic spellcheckers even introduce new errors!

For the long answer, see the ABC News article here, and our own opinion on electronic grammar and spellcheckers here.
